Tell me I'm not alone here. You're walking through the grocery store and some nosy woman comes to compliment you on how cute your child is. You and your partner wait awkwardly for the inevitable, "Who's the mommy?" Grrrr. This infuriating and perhaps well meaning woman can't possibly know the flurry of emotions she instantly evoked inside you. In my dreams I've replied, "None of your damn business!" flipped her the bird. In reality I pull out my less dramatic answer, "We both are." I watch her face as she pieces together what I mean. After her ah-ha moment, she says, "oh, well uhh she's cute." We part ways and I'm left contemplating how I feel about coming out to little old ladies every time I need a loaf of bread.
